What is IPL?
Are you concerned about how your complexion looks because of dark spots, discoloration, chronic redness, or sun damage? If so, we can perform a skin examination at Essential Med Aesthetics in San Antonio, TX to see whether you could benefit from IPL (intense pulsed light) therapy. A photofacial with IPL is a skin rejuvenation treatment for adults with hyperpigmentation issues on their neck and face. IPL may not be an invasive procedure, but it can be highly effective in producing impressive results.
Dr. Freda Cobbinah, our board-certified physician, recommends IPL for patients who qualify for it. After a few treatments, you should begin to see a healthier complexion with an improved texture and fewer discoloration spots. Call today to schedule a consultation for an IPL at our office.

Can I have an IPL PHOTOFACIAL?
An IPL photofacial works deep within the layers of your skin to diminish discoloration in your skin (especially brown lesions and sun spots) with little to no downtime. Ideal candidates for IPL treatments at Essential Med Aesthetics may have a combination of problems with their skin, such as sun damage, rosacea, brown spots (hyperpigmentation), rough texture, large pores, flushing, freckles, sun and age spots, or spider veins. Dr. Cobbinah will assess your skin to determine whether you're a candidate for a photofacial during your private consultation.
How Does IPL Work?
We perform photofacials in about 20 – 30 minutes in one of our treatment rooms. To start the treatment, your IPL technician will clean and dry your skin before covering your eyes with protective eye goggles. We'll pass the IPL device, which emits light energy pulses, over your skin. Many patients feel some discomfort during the IPL photofacial, but it's a quick procedure. There usually is no downtime associated with this treatment, but you will leave your appointment with your skin slightly swollen and pink. This will go away naturally as the day continues and can be masked with cosmetics if you want.
What to Expect
After an IPL photofacial, we recommend that patients apply a soothing serum to their skin's surface to minimize any irritation and speed healing. It also helps to use an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication to reduce swelling. After 2 – 5 days, the irregularities under the skin will come to the surface and begin to flake off. It's very important to keep your skin protected from the sun as much as possible after a photofacial and to avoid picking at your skin. While you'll see some visible improvements after your first treatment, your skin will attain the best results with multiple IPL photofacial sessions. Dr. Cobbinah recommends most patients get 3 – 6 treatments scheduled monthly at Essential Med Aesthetics.
